A WORLD OF DETAIL

Microscopes: a window into the invisible world

Microscopes: a window into the invisible world

Microscopes are instruments that let us see what is invisible to the naked eye. They magnify objects tens, hundreds and even millions of times, opening up an entire unseen world to researchers.

The first optical microscopes appeared in the seventeenth century and sparked a revolution: scientists could see plant cells and microorganisms for the first time. Later advances led to electron microscopes, which reveal extraordinarily fine detail in viruses, metals and nanoparticles.

Today, microscopes are widely used in medicine, biology, materials science, forensics and education. In schools and universities, they help students study the structure of living organisms; in scientific laboratories, they support advanced research.

The microscope has become an indispensable tool. It not only supports learning but also enables discoveries, expanding our understanding of nature and life.

Microscopy helped drive many scientific breakthroughs. In the seventeenth century, Robert Hooke introduced the term “cell”, while Antonie van Leeuwenhoek revealed the world of bacteria and protozoa.

These observations laid the foundations for cell theory and modern biology. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, improvements in optical systems and new technologies extended observation far beyond what had once seemed possible.

Modern microscopes are sophisticated technological systems. Electron microscopes examine objects at the nanometre scale, while scanning probe instruments can explore a surface atom by atom. Such systems are used in nanotechnology, materials science, pharmacology and forensics whenever exceptionally precise analysis is needed. Microscopy is not merely a supporting science: it is a key tool shaping many fields of knowledge and industry.
